People Power
The revolution in Egypt is something I have been following since a Rotaractor friend in Egypt tweeted very regular updates until internet connectivity was shut down there. The revolution is now entering its 7th day, and over 125 people have died so far.
From my perspective, most, if not all, governments have become more concerned with their own power (and keeping that power) than with doing what is in the best interest of the country (and global community) as a whole. But situations like that in Egypt are exceptionally sad, where a dictator, unwilling to give up his personal power, is clinging on while his citizens die while peacefully asserting their human rights.
It is disappointing that other governments are simply sitting around “assessing the situation. Then again, I can understand that no government is going to urge another leader to step down, when they themselves would be very unwilling to relinquish control either.
As a global citizen, it saddens me that Egyptians are dying in their own country for having stood up and said “Enough!¨ . (Not that I am ignoring those that die through war, starvation, lack of primary care etc. They are separate topics that also sadden me.) How many more deaths will occur before a new regime is in place?
The good thing is that more and more people are starting to say “Enough!” and instigate change. First in Tunisia, then Egypt, and Yemen. I hope that this will continue to spread, toppling dictatorships, and even our own “democracies”, with a new system of government installed that works from the ground roots level up, with decisions being made that are for the best of all people and our planet as a whole, rather than pandering to personal and corporate greed.
How long will it take for this change to come about? I suspect the outcome of the Egyptian revolt will by indicative of greater things to come, as the domino that causes an even larger number to fall.
